Film 318/365, Day 338/365 – Mimic

Lots of suspense and terror from Guillermo del Toro.  This is a very good thriller that will have you on the edge of your seats.  The pace of the film is fairly steady until the second half where it just seems to get faster and faster as the insects are frantically hunting Mira Sorvino.

Synopsis:  Three years ago a scientist released a genetically enhanced insect to kill off a variety of cockroach that was carrying a virulent disease.  The insect was so successful that is quickly ran out of its prey and in a bid to survive they adapted to hunt a new prey... man!

Film 194/365, Day 206/365 – Into the Blue

Sharks, sunken treasure, sharks, drug dealers and did I say sharks!  Into the Blue is a nice simple film that you can watch without thinking too much.  It is packed full of excellent underwater shots and beautiful panoramas of the Caribbean.  There is also lots of quite breathtaking shots of Jessica Alba in a tiny bikini…  Well worth watching for that alone.

Synopsis:  A diver uncovers what he believes to be the remains of a pirate ship which was supposed to have been carrying a large amount of gold when it sunk.  Whilst trying to explore the site they find a plane at the bottom of the sea with a large shipment of drugs.  Desperate to keep their site hidden until they can find proof of the treasure they decide to keep the plane a secret.  But then surely there will be people looking for the plane!

Film 113/365, Day 123/365 – The Goonies

The ultimate childhood adventure.  Anyone that grew up in the eighties will not doubt have seen the Goonies and if there is one person that didn’t love it, well, then they just shouldn’t be allowed to watch films anymore.  It is utterly brilliant, from Chunk’s truffle shuffle, to Sloth’s “Hey you guys!” and Data’s inventions.  This film has it all and nothing in recent times has come even close to capturing the magic of the Goonies!

Synopsis:  With their neighbourhood about to be destroyed to make way for the new exclusive golf course, a group of school friends who call themselves the Goonies try to find the long lost treasure of infamous pirate One Eyed Willie.  To get there they will have to brave a notorious criminal family and numerous booby traps.

Film 98/365, Day 106/365 – No Country for Old Men

I’ve never really enjoyed the Coen brothers work but was willing to give this one a chance and I was really enjoying it… right up until the last thirty minutes.  Once more the Coen brothers have wasted my time.  Can I have an ending please?  I'm disappointed because it was all going so well and then they blew it.  The acting was all very good but my main problem is with the story telling.

Synopsis: A Texas welder discovers a drug deal that has gone wrong and all members of the deal have been killed.  There is also a case full of money which he takes.  Unfortunately for him the case has a tracker in it and there are some very nasty people who want it back.

Film 66/365, Day 67/365 – Planet Terror

The Second half of Grindhouse, Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror is a slicker and more entertaining film than Death Proof.  Admittedly I like zombie films so this should be right up my street, and it is!  The characters have more depth than in Death Proof and the relationships and struggles between them are all very good.  Oh and there are lots of crazy zombies, military zombies and a chick with an assault rifle as a leg (complete with rocket launcher)!

Synopsis: A secret government weapon is released into the atmosphere which causes the locals to turn into flesh hungry zombies.  The few surviving folk have to band together in order to survive.  But where does the infection end and is there a cure or will the zombies just about eat everyone?
