Film 251/365, Day 271/365 – Jumper

It’s a pretty good concept followed by some great applications of the ability to teleport, it is also a pretty decent action film.  But that’s it, it’s just decent and nothing special.  Worth watching if you’ve got a bit of time to kill.  Good but could have been better.

Synopsis:  At a young age David discovers that he is different from other people, he has the ability to teleport.  With this newly discover power he is able to do pretty much whatever he wants.  But there are people that don’t think man should be able to wield that sort of power and will make sure David can’t use it by any means necessary.

Film 250/365, Day 270/365 – Godzilla

Mindless fun that maybe went on just a little too long.  For the record I quite enjoy Godzilla but bizarrely the script was one of the most closely guarded secrets of Hollywood and it probably shouldn’t have been.  One thing you do get with Godzilla is some excellent action sequences and a brilliant soundtrack, it is however 139 minutes long and they could have squeezed it into 100!

Synopsis:  Following some strange occurrences a group of scientists are gathered together without any knowledge of why.  Soon they discover that a mutated giant reptile is headed towards New York City and they need to find a way to stop it.

Film 249/365, Day 265/365 – Ong Bak

An excellent martial arts film packed with some unbelievable fights and stunts.  Tony Jaa is amazing and whilst some of his opponents seem to wait to be hit, it is only a few, the majority hit back with bottle, knives and fridges!  Also watch out for unusual graffiti throughout the film.  Ong Bak kicks ass!!!

Synopsis:  A young warrior from a small Thai village has to go to the big city to recover the head of the Buddha.  There he will have to be quick to stay alive and soon finds he must fight in order to recover the Buddha.

Film 248/365, Day 264/365 – The Replacement Killers

Some great action and gun fights, plus the added bonus of Mira Sorvino running around for the whole film in her bra!  I’m a big fan of Chow Yun-Fat and whilst this is nowhere near as good as A Better Tomorrow or Hard Boiled it is a good fun film to pass a bit of time.  If you don’t enjoy lots of gun fights then this probably isn’t for you.

Synopsis:  After a change of heart a contract killer is unable to complete his latest assignment and must now go on the run as replacement killers have been assigned to complete his contract and take him out.

Film 247/365, Day 262/365 – The Fifth Element

Zany, incredibly stylish and brilliant.  Luc Besson directs a thoroughly enjoyable film and with the help of Jean Paul Gautier they have created a future that still looks like it could be possible even though it was made 14 years ago.  Bruce is great, Milla is fantastic and Chris Tucker is hilarious.  I love it, great film.

Synopsis:  Korben Dallas, a former special forces opperative, has been called out of retirement to assist a female who is supposed to be the key to ultimate weapon and the only thing that can stop an evil entity on the other side of the universe that is determined to destroy Earth.  Problem is there are more than one group of people trying to find the ultimate weapon for their own reasons.

Film 246/365, Day 261/365 – Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

Very stylish animation and a pretty decent story.  I very much enjoyed the style and imagery of Gotham City and Batman in this feature length animation, the only thing that I thought let it down was the story which wasn’t quite as strong as it could have been.  Not bad, but could have been better.

Synopsis:  Someone is killing Gotham City gangsters and Batman is getting the blame.  Now with the whole of Gotham’s police hunting him down will Batman be able to stop the mysterious vigilante?  Also an old flame of Bruce Wayne’s has arrived in town and may make Bruce reconsider his role as Batman.

Film 245/365, Day 258/365 – One Eyed Monster

This is one of the stupidest films I’ve probably ever seen.  It also happens to have some of the funniest lines ever.  Obviously this is a tongue in cheek merger of the adult industry and teen monster movies.  Ironically there is less nudity than your average teen movie, but when you have lines like “we’re going to need a bigger tampon!” who cares!

Synopsis:  An adult movie crew go to an isolated cabin to shoot a movie.  Things seem to be going well until something strange happens to Ron Jeremy.  Soon Ron is dead and he disembodied member is going around the cabin killing the rest of the crew one by one!

Film 244/365, Day 258/365 – Beetlejuice

It’s a classic, there is no doubt about that.  Whether it is as good as I remember it however sadly is in doubt.  It is still funny, although it doesn’t really get going until Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice springs onto the scene.  It’s funny and incredible distinctive but sadly not quite as good as I remember.

Synopsis:  Barbara and Adam were very happy with their life right up until they died in a road accident.  Now that they are dead they are having a hard time adjusting to things, one thing in particular is the new family moving into their house.  They’ve almost given up when Beetlejuice, an expert in removing the living, offers them some help.

Film 243/365, Day 257/365 – Equilibrium

Excellent fight sequences and some fairly good science fiction.  There aren’t that many new concepts in Equilibrium but it puts them together quite well.  The best things however are the fights, whether with guns or swords and especially when using the guns in hand to hand combat!  Great fun.

Synopsis:  Emotions have been outlawed.  Anything that may cause emotion has been made illegal and is destroyed.  Drugs are administered to the populace to inhibit emotions.  All of these rules are ruthlessly enforced by the Clerics.  But what would happen if one of the Clerics discovers emotions?

Film 242/365, Day 256/365 – Warrior

Incredible!  It’s like having a work out whilst watching a film, I felt every blow and tensed for each hit.  The story itself is excellent and the characters are all quite believable.  But the thing that really sets this film apart from the others is the fights.  They are so intense that you feel like you are in the cage with them.  I loved it.

Synopsis:  Two brothers from a broken home end up on a collision course which will end in the Cage!  They both have their own problems and they both have something to fight for, but they both can’t win!

Film 241/365, Day 254/365 – Conan the Barbarian

I have lots of fond memories of Conan growing up and the film is still as enjoyable today as it was back then.  However as a story there are a lot of things that don’t really add up, like what the hell were they milling, what happened when Conan, the last child chained to the mill, was bought and lastly how did Conan manage to set a stone temple on fire???

Synopsis:  Conan was made a slave and his people were murdered by an evil warlord when he was a child.  Now he is all grown up and looking for revenge.  Will he be able to find the warlord and finally avenge his people or will the warlord finish of what he started?

Film 240/365, Day 254/365 – The Thing

Still as good today as it was back in 1982 when John Carpenter gave the Thing new life thanks to some bizarre and brilliant special effects.  Ultimately however it is the tension between the scientists as to who might be the thing that really drives the film.  Can you really trust anyone when they may be an alien?

Synopsis:  A group of scientists at a research facility in the Antarctic make a discovery that leaves them all unsure who to trust.  Something is infecting them one by one and assuming control.  But what lengths will they go to to protect themselves or the whole human race?

Film 239/365, Day 253/365 – Battle: Los Angeles

A very good action film.  It was like Independence Day hold the cheese, well, almost there is bound to be some cheese but it was more of a sprinkling.  There is plenty of action and tensions as they enter the battle field unaware of what they are up against and just how they are going to defeat them.  It was far better than some of the alien invasion films of late.  I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Synopsis:  Strange meteorites enter the Earth’s atmosphere and impact at sea of the coast of a number of large cities.  It very quickly becomes apparent that these are not meteors and it is an alien invasion.  A platoon of marines are dispatched to recover civilians but this unlike anything they’ve faced before.

Film 238/365, Day 251/365 – Ink

Intense and creepy, but thoroughly engaging.  It takes a little while to really get into Ink as they story is very closely guarded at the start, but the visuals, sounds and effects keep you going.  Make sure you stick with it though, because it is well worth it as the ending really picks up the pace and leaves your heart pounding at your chest!

Synopsis:  Emma is kidnapped from her room by a mysterious man known as Ink and taken into a dream world where there are two rival forces that are responsible for dreams and nightmares respectively.  Can the force for good change events and enable Emma’s father to save her?

Film 237/365, Day 250/365 – Mystery Men

It’s funny and silly in equal parts.  All of the characters have their moments but sadly they also kind of go off the boil every now and then.  It is still very funny although I think the villains are almost better than the heroes especially Geoffrey Rush and Eddie Izzard.

Synopsis:  A group of amateur superheroes find that they are the only hope to save their city from the evil clutches of Casanova Frankenstein.  Mr Furious, the Blue Raja and Shoveler will need to get more help if they are to defeat Casanova!

Film 236/365, Day 250/365 – American Virgin

Mostly stupid with some funny moments.  They just seem to keep rolling them out, and you have to keep watching them because every once in a while they finally get it right and do something special.  This is not one of those times sadly.  It’s fairly easy watching but there are much better films in this style out there.

Synopsis:  Priscilla has just been awarded a scholarship by her abstinence group.  But one night a college she ends up getting drunk and out of control, even worse the whole event was capture on camera and is about to be released as part of Chicks go Crazy!  Now she’s got to get the footage back before her scholarship is pulled.

Film 235/365, Day 250/365 – A Boy and His Dog

A dark and disturbing view of the world after civilisation has crumbled.  Quite frankly the telepathic dog is the least weird thing.  It would appear that all people will want to do is eat, have sex and kill each other and that goes for the religious cults that survive in the subterranean cities with their absurd face paint!  Truly bizarre film!

Synopsis:  Years after World War IV the world is a desolate waste land.  Vic and his dog Blood are trying to stay alive.  They scavenge for canned food and women!  Blood is super intelligent, incredibly sarcastic and able to talk to Vic telepathically.

Film 234/365, Day 249/365 – How to Train Your Dragon

This is an excellent film.  You should definitely see this!  The story is fantastic and the animation is incredible.  From start to finish this film will leave you captivated and if you don’t feel like a little kid again whilst watching then you probably are a little kid, so don’t worry.  Cinematic gold!

Synopsis:  Hiccup is a young Viking who isn’t very good at being a Viking.  He can’t wield a weapon, he’s not very good at fighting dragons and as a result is constant disappointment to his father, the chief.  One day when Hiccup captures a very rare dragon is finds that he is unable to kill and instead learns that there is more to the dragons than they think they know.

Film 233/365, Day 248/365 – Van Helsing

This film seems to raise a lot of negative opinions.  Personally I think they couldn’t be more wrong.  Firstly the story is actually very good, it’s engaging and thoroughly interesting.  The sets and special effects are incredible.  Ultimately it is clearly homage to the old horror films and stories and it does that very well.  It has vampires, werewolves, monster hunters and Kate Beckinsale so you can’t really go wrong.  Great action and adventure!

Synopsis:  Van Helsing, an agent for a secret order of knights, is sent to Transylvania to destroy the legendary monster Dracula in order to save eight generations of a blood line from ending up in purgatory.  When Van Helsing arrives there is only one member of the blood line left so he’s going to have to work fast if he is to save them.

Film 232/365, Day 247/365 – Toy Story 2

This will always be a fun film to watch.  Anyone that can sit there and say that they don’t like Toy Story is lying!  The idea that toys are alive and have adventures when you aren’t around is excellent.  The characters are brilliant and the new ones just add to the fun.  Guaranteed good time.

Synopsis:  There is a buzz of excitement in Andy’s bedroom, Woody is looking forward to going on Cowboy camp for some one on one time with Andy.  When a rescue attempt ends with Woody being stolen by a collector the rest of the gang go out into the open to try to rescue Woody.  But will he want to be rescued?

Film 231/365, Day 246/365 – Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

More swashbuckling mayhem with Captain Jack Sparrow!  Johnny Depp is once again brilliant.  As expected there are plenty of laughs, lots of action on the high seas and now more creatures with the Flying Dutchman and the Kraken.  There’s something for all the family!

Synopsis:  Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann have been arrested and are being forced to help a corrupt Lord find Jack Sparrow.  Jack’s got more problems however as Davy Jones is looking for him and is willing to release the Kraken.

Film 230/365, Day 245/365 – Spring Breakdown

This film makes me want to go on spring break!  OK, so it is silly and incredibly clichéd but it's still funny, mostly thanks to Amy Poehler and Rachel Dratch who are hilarious.  It’s just some good old fashioned stupid fun.

Synopsis:  Three college friends have embarked on the world and discovered it to not be quite as they had imagined.  The geeks still get nothing.  Desperate to turn their lives around they go on Spring Break.  Whilst there however they need to keep an eye on the Senator’s daughter and make sure she doesn’t do anything crazy.  But then who is keeping an eye on them?

Film 229/365, Day 243/365 – Batman and Robin

Completely and utterly rubbish!  The script is crap, the acting is terrible, in fact there isn’t a single redeeming feature in the whole film.  And when you consider the budget and the actors involved it is inexcusable.  It’s as if they tried to merge Tim Burton’s Gothic Batman with the Batman from the TV series from the ‘60s.  Appalling!!!

Synopsis:  Batman and Robin continue to protect Gotham City.  Now they are facing with Mr Freeze and Poison Ivy, but maybe the real problem is the friction between Batman and Robin.  Will they be able to stick together long enough to save the day?

Film 228/365, Day 243/365 – Underworld: Evolution

More vampires, more action and more Kate Beckinsale in that tight leather body suit... good times!  This film follows on from the original, so if you haven’t seen the original then you really should before you watch this one.  It has a good mix of action and some interesting ideas with the vampire and werewolf mythology.  Vampires and werewolves as they should be!

Synopsis:  Selene, a vampire, is on the run with Michael, the first ever hybrid vampire/werewolf, pursued by Marcus, the original vampire.  Marcus knows much more about Selene’s past than she does and he also knows that she is the key to locating his brother, William, the original werewolf.
