Film 326/365, Day 344/365 – X-Men Origins: Wolverine

The X-Men are good but not so much without Wolverine, however Wolverine without the X-Men is still awesome.  There is plenty of action and story is interesting although there is so much back story with Wolverine that it is hard to squeeze it all into one film.  Basically, what I’m saying is give us more Wolverine and not James McAvoy as Professor X!

Synopsis:  After years of fighting other peoples fights Wolverine leaves to go and live a normal life.  Everything is going well until his girlfriend is killed by his estranged brother Sabre Tooth.  To avenge his girlfriend’s death he agrees to enter into the Weapon X program and have an indestructible metal fused to his skeleton.

Film 319/365, Day 338/365 – X-Men: The Last Stand

Too many characters and not enough substance.  This is definitely the worst of the three X-Men films, the story is nowhere near as strong as the previous two.  It would appear that what happened to the third Austin Powers film has happened here, where they have tried to accommodate everyone that wanted to be involved at the expense of the story.

Synopsis:  A cure for mutations has been developed and the government are looking to eradicate mutations and Magneto is determined not to allow that to happen.  Also Jean Grey has returned from the dead and isn’t acting like herself.

Film 265/365, Day 291/365 – X-Men 2

Easily the best of the X-Men films in my opinion.  It’s got lots of Wolverine being particularly angry and Magneto at his best.  The story is far stronger than the first film and don’t even get me started on the third one!  A good action film with more than just action.

Synopsis:  When a mutant attempts to assassinate the President of the United States of America the X-Men quickly track him down.  However once they find him he has no recollection of the incident or a significant period of time before that.  They must track down who is behind it before more damage can be done.

Film 233/365, Day 248/365 – Van Helsing

This film seems to raise a lot of negative opinions.  Personally I think they couldn’t be more wrong.  Firstly the story is actually very good, it’s engaging and thoroughly interesting.  The sets and special effects are incredible.  Ultimately it is clearly homage to the old horror films and stories and it does that very well.  It has vampires, werewolves, monster hunters and Kate Beckinsale so you can’t really go wrong.  Great action and adventure!

Synopsis:  Van Helsing, an agent for a secret order of knights, is sent to Transylvania to destroy the legendary monster Dracula in order to save eight generations of a blood line from ending up in purgatory.  When Van Helsing arrives there is only one member of the blood line left so he’s going to have to work fast if he is to save them.

Film 205/365, Day 220/365 – Swordfish

If you enjoy a good twist, a little bit of deception and some excellent action then Swordfish is the film for you.  Ok, so there are some bits which are obviously not real, like the virus Hugh Jackman’s character is creating being shown as a 3D object where as it would really be just lines of text, which wouldn’t look as good on the big screen.  Still I like and it’s definitely one that I would watch again and again.  Great opening scene.

Synopsis:  A hacker who is attempting to put his life together so that he can rescue his daughter from her mother and step-father / porn tycoon is given an opportunity to make enough money to make it all possible.  All he’s got to do is help a renegade counter-terrorism organisation steal billions of dollars of dirty government money.
