Underworld: Awakening

This film ticks so many boxes that I am guaranteed to watch it.  Vampires – ding, werewolves – ding, lots of action – ding, Kate Beckinsale in a leather corset – ding, ding, ding… we have a winner!  All that said however I am left feeling slightly disappointed.  The story was almost beyond predictable and lacked any real punch or intrigue.  No doubt they will make another, which is fine I’m more than likely to watch it (feels kind of like the Resident Evil series, if they keep making them I’ll keep watching them), but I’d be much happier if they worked on the story a bit more.

Film 233/365, Day 248/365 – Van Helsing

This film seems to raise a lot of negative opinions.  Personally I think they couldn’t be more wrong.  Firstly the story is actually very good, it’s engaging and thoroughly interesting.  The sets and special effects are incredible.  Ultimately it is clearly homage to the old horror films and stories and it does that very well.  It has vampires, werewolves, monster hunters and Kate Beckinsale so you can’t really go wrong.  Great action and adventure!

Synopsis:  Van Helsing, an agent for a secret order of knights, is sent to Transylvania to destroy the legendary monster Dracula in order to save eight generations of a blood line from ending up in purgatory.  When Van Helsing arrives there is only one member of the blood line left so he’s going to have to work fast if he is to save them.

Film 228/365, Day 243/365 – Underworld: Evolution

More vampires, more action and more Kate Beckinsale in that tight leather body suit... good times!  This film follows on from the original, so if you haven’t seen the original then you really should before you watch this one.  It has a good mix of action and some interesting ideas with the vampire and werewolf mythology.  Vampires and werewolves as they should be!

Synopsis:  Selene, a vampire, is on the run with Michael, the first ever hybrid vampire/werewolf, pursued by Marcus, the original vampire.  Marcus knows much more about Selene’s past than she does and he also knows that she is the key to locating his brother, William, the original werewolf.

Film 47/365, Day 54/365 – Underworld

Selene is a death dealer by trade, vampire by nature.  She is one of the best at what she does, and that is to hunt Lycans, their vicious enemies in a war that has lasted for over one thousand years.  When a routine hunt turns openly violent something didn’t feel right for Selene.  Who is this human the Lycans were following and why?

Underworld is an excellent film, and how Vampires and Werewolves should behave.  It is packed full of action with plenty of story to boot, enough for several more films obviously!  The world in which Underworld takes place is fantastically dark and Gothic.  One of my all time favourite vampire films, up there with 30 Days of Night.
